Students and teachers in the Lauderdale County School District's Read to Be Ready Summer Reading Program celebrated a month of books, art projects, field trips and growing as readers and writers! Dream, Grow, Believe!

Day 15 was spent with Malala and her magic pencil. The kids learned a little about Malala’s life growing up in Pakistan and how she fought for equal education in her country.
We visited the library for the last program. Thank you to the Ripley Fire Department, Ripley Police Department, and EMT service for speaking to the kids today. They really enjoyed hearing about how they work together to keep the community safe.
Mayor Jon Pavletic read to the kids and shared what a mayor does in a city.
We read all about weird and cute animals in Cute as an Axolotl and the kids got to argue why their favorite animal was the cutest.

Day 14 was a trip to the Memphis Zoo. We saw a lot of favorite animals and enjoyed our time together. Then we had lunch at Overton Park.

Day 13 was filled with all things basketball. We read Salt in His Shoes, which is a story about Michael Jordan, written by his mother and sister. Michael learned that with practice and determination, he could reach his dreams. The kids used colored salt to decorate their MJ shoe. Of course we had to shoot some hoops, too!

Day 12 of Read to Be Ready camp was a good one! TCAT nursing students were are guest readers and showed our kids how to care for others. They showed how to give a basic exam and then checked on all their stuffed animals.
We read about how we are all human and make mistakes, but we can all make others feel better. We broke into groups and performed skits on how to show compassion and empathy.
The Boo Boos That Changed the World, which was about the invention of the Band-Aid was also a big hit. We conducted an experiment that tested 3 different brands of adhesive bandages. Which brand could stay on the longest underwater?
Our day needed with writing stories about a time when we needed a Band-Aid.

Day 11 was built around the text We Don’t Eat Our Classmates. Students partnered up and collaborated to find things they have in common and participated in a Socratic Seminar to debate pros and cons of having a dinosaur in your classroom. A fun filled day of reading, writing and learning.

Day 10 was spent as guest at Dyersburg Primary School. They had stations set up for us to learn all about the solar system. We made a planet hat, made moon sand, learned about the phases of the moon, wrote a poem about the sun, and created constellations. Our kids shared their sun poems aloud and did an amazing job!

Day 9 was filled with a lot of oopsies! We read Beautiful Oops and created a picture from a bunch of “mistakes.“ We wrote an acrostic poem using the word “mistake”.

We're hiring! A job fair for general cleaners and custodians will be held on Saturday, June 22, at Ripley Elementary School from 10am-1:00pm.

Day 8 of Read to Be Ready Camp was spent at Tipton County Museum, Veterans Memorial and Nature Center. Campers enjoyed a nature walk through the woods, a guided tour through the museum and a visit with WW II reenactors.

Day 7 was so much fun! We began our day reading The Big Umbrella. Could we all fit under one umbrella?? We did! We wrote an acrostic poem using the word “rainy”. The local library was a big hit today. Mayor Gaines read us a story and the snake lady came! She taught us all about snakes, and we even got to touch one. When we returned to school, we read Hey, Wall. This book is about a boy who brightened up his community by painting art on a blank wall. The kids collaborated to make their own mural of our community.

Day 6 of Read to Be Ready Camp was spent with our friends at Halls Elementary School. First our Superintendent Shawn Kimble read Star Wars are You Scared Darth Vader. Next, basketball’s Coach King read Acoustic Rooster and the kids created their own guitars. We fed, petted and learned about some animals in our area. Miss Rachel Harrell brought in some friends to show musical collaborations. A BIG thank you to Halls Elementary for hosting us!
