Lauderdale County School District’s Summer Reading Program
Day 15 was spent with Malala and her magic pencil. The kids learned a little about Malala’s life growing up in Pakistan and how she fought for equal education in her country. We visited the library for the last program. Thank you to the Ripley Fire Department, Ripley Police Department, and EMT service for speaking to the kids today. They really enjoyed hearing about how they work together to keep the community safe. Mayor Jon Pavletic read to the kids and shared what a mayor does in a city. We read all about weird and cute animals in Cute as an Axolotl and the kids got to argue why their favorite animal was the cutest.

Day 13 was filled with all things basketball. We read Salt in His Shoes, which is a story about Michael Jordan, written by his mother and sister. Michael learned that with practice and determination, he could reach his dreams. The kids used colored salt to decorate their MJ shoe. Of course we had to shoot some hoops, too!

Day 13 of Read to Be Read Camp
Day 12 of Read to Be Ready camp was a good one! TCAT nursing students were are guest readers and showed our kids how to care for others. They showed how to give a basic exam and then checked on all their stuffed animals. We read about how we are all human and make mistakes, but we can all make others feel better. We broke into groups and performed skits on how to show compassion and empathy. The Boo Boos That Changed the World, which was about the invention of the Band-Aid was also a big hit. We conducted an experiment that tested 3 different brands of adhesive bandages. Which brand could stay on the longest underwater? Our day needed with writing stories about a time when we needed a Band-Aid.
