The At-Home Decodable Book Series is now available for free for all Tennessee families of K–2 children. These materials are meant to encourage at-home reading practice to help young learners become stronger readers. This launch is part of the family component of the state’s Reading 360 initiative to help boost strong reading skills amongst Tennessee students. Each free decodable packet has 7 decodable booklets, which contain 20+ exciting stories full of sounds and words to practice. Beth Choate, LPN from TCAT Bells spoke to the Nursing Classes about the Medical Assistant Program offered. The class is 8 months long, and students will earn a certification in CNA, Phlebotomy, and EKG. This course is also a bridge to the nursing program offered at the TXAT for those who may not know for sure if healthcare is the right career choice, or for those needing help with reading comprehension skills prior to taking the nursing class. Students may use their Tennessee Promise Scholarship for this course. The next class begins September 2021.

Every year, Robert’s parents, Bobby and Lisa Reynolds like to offer a $500 scholarship to a Ripley High School student who is in the dual enrollment program and plans to attend TCAT in the Fall after graduation. This scholarship is done in memory of their son Robert Reynolds who was a RHS graduate that passed in 2016. He attended TCAT and they want to encourage students to attend TCAT for technical and trade training for the workforce. The deadline to apply is April 16, 2021. On December 8, the Lauderdale County Board of Education discussed the school operating calendar and voted to keep the staggered, odd/even schedule through the month of January. Wayne has done an extraordinary job reviving the RHS water garden and signs on the campus! For his Eagle Scout Service project he redid the whole water garden area, cleaning and re mulching and revive seating. The Tennessee Department of Human Services announced financial assistance is available for families who qualify for free or reduced school lunches, through the Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) program. Parents who already receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) benefits currently, do not need to apply. The funds began arriving on the EBT card they already use beginning June 12. Parents who do not receive SNAP benefits, but whose children do qualify for free or reduced school meals, will need to apply for P- EBT online https://tdhs.service-now.com/. The application period has been extended through July 13, 2020. Individuals who need assistance completing their P-EBT application or have general questions about the program are encouraged to call the TDHS hotline at 1-833-496-0661 and select option 3.

High Schools are working on plans to celebrate their seniors. In the next week, dates will start rolling out for alternate plans on academic awards recognition, banquets, baccalaureates, etc. Graduation plans are still under review, but should be finalized and communicated soon.
Pre-K & Kindergarten registration packets may be picked up at Halls Elementary and Ripley Primary on Tuesday, April 28, from 9-11am. You may deliver the application back to the school on May 12 from 9-11am or you may mail it to the school.

Due to the current state of emergency related to COVID-19 the Tennessee Higher Education Commission/Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation (THEC/TSAC) has made the decision to waive the April 1 community service requirement. A Tennessee Promise student enrolling at an eligible institution for the summer term will not be required to complete and submit community service to maintain eligibility for that term. Furthermore THEC/TSAC continues to monitor the impact from COVID-19 related to the July 1, 2020 community service deadline while our partnering organizations work to arrange alternatives for students. RHS announced at the SR meeting today the final results of the ACT Senior Retake. 69 students improved by 1 point. 44 improved by at least 2 points. 16 students met their personal projection. 23 students are Hope Scholarship Ready and 7 met ACT Benchmarks.

Lauderdale AWARE hosted their biannual Culture and Compassion Retreat this weekend at Lakeshore Camp in Eva, TN. Students from both Ripley and Halls discussed how to overcome prejudice, stereotypes, discrimination, and negative labels through showing compassion, vulnerability, and establishing genuine relationships. Lauderdale County students described the experience as transformational and healing.

As a culminating activity in a unit on the skeletal and muscular systems students were to create a model of muscle/bone movement. Students in Ms Beavers’ class learned how the muscles work and how biomedical engineers can help keep the muscular system healthy. They then created their own medical devices to aide in the recovery of a strained bicep. Students were all given the same materials to work with and their devices were tested on force applied and distance applied.

The RHS Concert Band held its Spring Concert on Monday, April 29th which featured an original composition, “Chorale and Chaccone,” by student Hayden Elrafei. Elrafei is a student in the Music Theory class and enjoys exploring what he can redefine in this study of theory and composition. He plans to continue composition for the remainder of his high school career, and plans on majoring in Music Theory in college.

Congratulations to RHS Student Jonathon on being awarded 1st place in The Congressional Art Contest. This is a contest between all of the counties within the 8th district with a first place winner for each county and each award presented by the congressman David Kustoff.
Ripley High School will hold a college and career fair Tuesday April 16 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Representatives from area colleges, local jobs, the State Education Department, and American Job Center will be present. Parents and students are invited.

Tomorrow at 5:30 pm Ripley High School will hold a parent meeting about registration for upcoming sophomore, junior, and senior students for the 2019-2020 school year. The meeting will be held in the theater. Counselors, graduation coach, and dual enrollment coordinator will be present to answer any questions. Please make plans to attend we hope to see you there!
Do our phones create too much distraction? In Mrs. Parmenter's Senior Chemistry 2 class students were asked to turn on their notifications and turn up the volume on their phones. They made a mark every time They were interrupted. Mrs. Parmenter wanted to demonstrate how many times they are interrupted by their cellular devices. This was the result of 13 students and one teacher in one class period.

RHS Parents, your student must make a $25.00 deposit this year to be able to receive the 2019 yearbook. No extra copies will be ordered to sell afterwards. We will order what the students pay for or put down a deposit for only! Money is due on March 21st.

Blood drive will be this Thursday March 14. Students must pick up a form during lunch today from Mrs. Marcie in the cafeteria. No forms will be accepted after Wednesday. Thursday morning students that have signed up will receive a colored sheet in the front lobby prior to 8:00 am.

Youth Leadership Lauderdale applications are due today. Applications can be turned in at the RHS guidance office until 3 today or the Chamber of Commerce until 4 p.m. today.

Ripley High School JROTC will hold a U.S. Flag Retirement Ceremony in March. They are asking for the community to turn in flags that are worn, faded, tattered, or being unused. You may bring these flags to RHS JROTC to be retired.
